All about the Colours I LOVE!!

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

I have been often asked by many of my followers and fellow artists about what colours I use and how lightfast, Uv protected and vibrant they are! So here I am sharing all about these colours... There are two types of colours available in the market - Student grade and Artist grade. Student grade colours are usually affordable and good for practice. They are sometimes less vibrant in certain brands but since they are pocket friendly you can always buy them without a second thought. These colours have low quality pigment and are not lightfast and uv protected. If you are new to art or pursuing art as a hobby or want to understand the application of various colours, then go for this category. Almost all the brands have this category mentioned on the product packaging. Also you can guess the quality of the colours from its pricing. These colours look good initially but have less life; you may have experienced this in your childhood sketchbooks mostly. The student grade colours will fade away in a few years and become pale/ light. They also damage the work and peel off from the surface. Artist grade colours are usually expensive. Because they are artist grade, they have good quality pigments; they are smooth and have good light fastness (which is mentioned on the product packaging as it varies brand to brand and colour to colour). If you are a professional artist or want to start selling your art then this is something you should consider investing in. When you sell your art to someone, your customer expects a good quality from your work not only by finishing but also by the quality of supplies you have used. A good quality art supply has a long life. They usually stay the same for at least 20 - 50 years depending upon the application and the quality. uv protection is also mentioned on the packaging. also don't forget to advise your client to protect and properly clean the artwork from time to time and also keep it away from direct sunlight. Also, just like we save our work on the computer!! It is important to protect our artwork with sealer or varnish. Different colours require different protectors so it is important to get the right protector/ sealer / varnish.
